Get ready for CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Week

Every year the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) picks one week to focus on safe-driving awareness, education, and enforcement in an effort to reduce crashes on the road. This year’s Operation Safe Driver Week takes place between July 10-16, 2022.
Law enforcement throughout North America will be on the lookout for drivers engaging in unsafe driving behaviors including distracted driving, following too closely, improper lane changes, not wearing a seatbelt and of course, speeding.
Speeding is a major factor in traffic deaths and injuries, which is why it’s the focus area for this year’s Operation Safer Driver Week. In order to reduce the chances of getting a warning or citation, make sure you’re letting drivers know about Operation Safe Driver Week and to be extra careful this week.
We’ve put together some tips to help drivers stay informed, safe, and on the road:
- Keep safety top of mind with regular training sessions. Whether your fleet has a dedicated Safety Manager or a Fleet Manager juggling it all, it helps to have a consistent schedule for safety training. At HDVI we’ve partnered with Infiniti Workforce to bring all our fleet customers monthly trainings so you can easily get drivers the education they need and track progress across the business.
- Run a contest during Operation Safe Driver Week. Encourage safe driving by looking at overall hard brake events, speeding events, distracted driving events and clean inspections, and award a prize to the best performing drivers during this week.
- Keep vehicles in tip-top shape with preventative maintenance (PM). Proactive vehicle maintenance is always preferred to reactive. Maintain your vehicles with scheduled services and ensure drivers are doing pre and post-trip inspections and reporting any problems no matter how big or small. If you don’t take care of your vehicle, you’re much more likely to get pulled over and inspected.
- Do internal safety audits. Practice makes perfect. Get in the habit of doing internal safety audits and inspections on a bi-annual or quarterly basis to assess policies and procedures, refresh drivers on the inspection process and review any new regulations. It’s important drivers know what to expect and have all required documents, forms, and emergency equipment for a streamlined inspection.
- Use your telematics data to identify risky behaviors. Use the data available to you to identify hot spot areas and behaviors that could result in a crash or claim. We’ve found that if you use visuals and actually pull up maps and stats on a screen or print them out, it can greatly help with driver conversations and coaching. While there can be a lot of data to wade through, telematics can be a great tool for improving safety. At HDVI your success in safety and risk management is our success too.
